Magical Sage Throat Healing Potion
There are a number of teas that sooth the throat but none more available as a home remedy than Sage! It grows everywhere and as a woody herb, usually remains vibrant in the garden year round. Sage works so well it’s really pretty incredible. I will typically make this as a tea and drink it straight, however those who tend to complain about a scratchy throat in this house (the smaller people) are more likely to accept this with a drop of honey. It can also just be used as a gargle for a sore throat. Sage has numerous properties that are known to fight infections of the throat. It’s a good idea to try when the first symptom of a sore throat appears. Three cups a day would be a typical therapeutic dose to combat a potential incoming throat infection. As with all herbs taken as homeopathic medicine, women who are pregnant should avoid taking therapeutic doses of herbs.
Drying out herbs for teas, remedies, and culinary preparations is easy. Simply hang them upside down in a area that is dark, dry, and warmish. The average time to dry is about a week, although sage may take a little longer than the average herb because it has thick and lush leaves. Usually when I dry out herbs or flowers, I will do a bundle of several at once. This time around I dried out sage, lavender, thyme, and spearmint together. Herbs are ready when they are crispy. You should be able to easily crush up the leaves and stems with the hands. When they are ready, just place in an airtight glass jar and label.
Add 1 tsp of dried sage to a tea infuser.
Bring 10-12 oz water to a low boil and fill tea cup, let rest at least 10 minutes… longer for kids.
If adding honey, remove infuser when tea is ready and add a squirt of honey and stir.
If using as a gargle, remove tea infuser and continue to cool until liquid is nearly room temperature.
Another option as to add dried peppermint or spearmint as a substitute for half the Sage.
